How to Register for GST?
Under the GST regime, all the businesses having annual turnover above 20 lakhs in case of Supplier of Services and Rs 40 lakhs in case of supplier of Goods are required to register for GST. If your annual turnover is less than the above mentioned amount GST registration is optional. But it is recommended to get registered for GST to avail Input Tax credit.
Moreover, for below mentioned businesses it is mandatory to register for GST irrespective of their turnover :
Person doing business overseas.
e-commerce aggregator.(Amazon, Flipkart etc)
Person doing business through an e-commerce aggregator.
Individuals registered under the pre-GST law i.e VAT, Excise duty etc.
Those paying tax under the reverse charge mechanism.
Businesses with inter state operations.
Input credit means at the time of paying tax on output, you ll reduce the tax you ve already paid on inputs and pay the balance amount.
For example; Tax on output is Rs. 1000 and three inputs used for producing the output are namely A, B, and C. Tax paid on the acquisition of input A is Rs. 50, input B is Rs. 150 and for Input C is Rs. 250. The tax which will be paid by the manufacturer are going to be Rs. 550
Tax = 1000- (50+150+250).
This facility can only be availed when the taxpayer is registered under GST. Therefore if your business has a less turnover than the threshold value , then also its highly recommended to register for GST.

Government has given the facility to apply and register for GST online. You can also go to Government approved GST Suvidha Providers (GSPs) for registration.
Steps to register GST Online:
Visit GST portal > Click on Services > Registration > New Registration. Fill in the details as asked and click on Proceed. You will receive OTP for verifying Mobile Number and email id.Upon completion you will receive a Temporary Reference Number(TRN)
Once you have received Temporary Reference Number(TRN), Click on Services > Registration>New Registration> Click on Temporary Reference Number Tab
Fill in the TRN and captcha and click on Proceed.You will be redirected to the registration page
Registration page contains 10 tabs. Fill all the details . You can take help of your CA/ Tax Consultant/GST practitioner for avoiding any mistakes in filling the form.
After filling all the details and submitting an Application Reference Number will be generated which you will receive through SMS and Email which can be used to track your application status.
Once your GST application is approved you will get confirmation through SMS and Email.You will receive your GSTIN which will also be your temporary Username and password. You can login to GST Portal using these credentials which you can change for future use.
You can download your Registration Certificate after 3-5 Days. For downloading registration certificate go to Services >User Services > View or Download Certificates and click the Download button.
